Microsoft 365 Apps on Server 2016/2019

Microsoft has announced that support for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows Server 2016 and 2019 will end on 14th October 2025. However, to help organisations during their transition, Microsoft will now continue to provide security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows Server 2016 and 2019 until 10th October 2028.

At Novus, we see this as a practical opportunity to reduce manual workloads, improve system security, and streamline IT operations – especially for schools and SMBs managing large fleets of devices with limited IT resource.

  • End of Support Date: After 14th October this year, Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer be supported on Windows Server 2016 or 2019.
  • Security Updates: Security updates will continue to be provided until 10th October 2028, allowing organisations additional time to plan and implement their migration strategies.
  • No New Features: During this extended period, only security updates will be available; no new features or non-security updates will be released.

Recommended Actions:

To ensure continued support and optimal performance, consider the following options:

  • Upgrade to a supported Windows Server Version: Microsoft 365 Apps is supported on Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025 during their respective mainstream support periods.
  • Transition to Cloud-based solutions: Consider moving to Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop, which offer modern, cloud-based environments for running Microsoft 365 Apps.
