Hotpatch for Windows 11

With the public preview of Hotpatching for Windows 11 (version 24H2), Microsoft is transforming the way organisations handle security updates. This innovative feature ensures your devices remain secure without disrupting productivity. Unlike traditional updates, hotpatches apply security fixes immediately without requiring a system restart, providing a streamlined approach to OS maintenance.

Key benefits of Hotpatching:

  • Real-time protection: Security patches take effect immediately upon installation.
  • Minimal Disruption: Users don’t need to interrupt work for restarts, improving efficiency.
  • Consistent Security: Devices receive eight hotpatch updates annually, complemented by four quarterly cumulative updates.

The Hotpatching Process

Hotpatching operates on a quarterly cycle:

  • Quarterly Updates: In January, April, July, and October, standard cumulative updates (including features and enhancements) are applied with a restart.
  • Hotpatch Months: In the two subsequential months, hotpatches deliver scoped security fixes without requiring restarts.
